Real Estate Markets • Remodeling For Resale • Location Factor![]() Along the James River in east-central Virginia, Richmond was once the capital of the Confederacy and has a strong sense of history with several museums and points of interest. A diverse manufacturing base along with government and educational employment helps support the economy, and Richmond provides easy access to Washington, D.C., 100 miles north. Entertainment amenities are somewhat lacking and the city contends with its share of growth and sprawl. Arlington lies directly across the Potomac from Washington, DC, and is closely linked to the capital. Arlington is designated as a county but is often inaccurately referred to as a city because it has no incorporated towns. (It is designated as a city by the United States Census Bureau for statistical reasons.) Arlington County contains a major airport, many Federal Government offices, the Department of the Navy, the Drug Enforcement Agency, and Arlington National Cemetery. Arlington is quite walkable and is home to a highly educated population. It contains many government memorials and historical points of interest relating to the Civil War. Arlington has a high cost of living and suffers from heavy traffic and congestion. On the southeast Virginia coast, Norfolk and Virginia Beach straddle the waterway that empties into the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Norfolk is located to the south of the waterway, while Virginia Beach is located a few miles to the east. The economy is supported by shipping and shipbuilding, as well as fishing, tourism, and the local Navy and Marines. Virginia Beach contains a mix of tourist, commercial, and residential areas, and is experiencing the most population growth. The population is well educated, and plenty of water recreation opportunities exist, but a lack of adequate air service coupled with urban sprawl are concerns.
