Charleston is located in west-central West Virginia along the Kanawha River and depends upon government and chemical related industries for its economy. The city has some modest cultural amenities and a clean downtown area. The nearby Gawley and New rivers provide opportunities for white water rafting. Charleston has a low cost of living, but it is fairly isolated and industrial with a lack of air-service options and a high crime rate. Located in extreme western West Virginia along the Ohio River, Huntington serves as a transport hub between Ohio, the Great Lakes, and Kentucky. The local economy is supported by chemicals, metal products, and glass products manufacturing. The cost of living is low and Huntington has a small town atmosphere, but it is also affected by lack of entertainment, low educational attainment, and isolation from larger city centers.
