tennessee farm great smoky mountains Located in southeast central USA, Tennessee's area is greater than 42,000 square miles.  Bounded by the Mississippi River to the west, its terrain rises from the lowlands in the west to the Great Smoky Mountains in the east.  The capital is Nashville and other major cities include Memphis and Knoxville.

Nashville is known worldwide as the country music capital and is a famous music-related tourist destination.  Located in north-central Tennessee along the Cumberland River, Nashville also features an NFL and NHL team, as well as minor league teams in almost every sport.  The city is home to Vanderbilt University, Fisk University, and a number of smaller colleges.  Behind tourism and music, the economy is bolstered by government, banking, finance, insurance, the auto industry, and healthcare.  Cultural and entertainment amenities are excellent and the cost of living is low, but Nashville also contends with hot, humid summers and high crime rates.

Located along the Mississippi River at the Arkansas border, Memphis is Tennessee's largest city.  Memphis has a cyclical history of destruction and reconstruction, dating back to the pre-Civil War era.  Today, urban renewal and excellent cultural assets place Memphis on an upswing.  Memphis is the home of the blues and Elvis Presley, attracting tourists from all over the world.  The economy is diverse and small business-friendly, and healthcare is strong.  Memphis has a low cost of living but deals with high crime rates and hot and muggy summers.

Knoxville is located in east-central Tennessee and is home to the University of Tennessee.  Its proximity to the base of the Appalachian mountain range renders it a gateway to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.  The local economy is supported by the university, healthcare, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and a few large corporate employers.  Urban renewal has helped revitalize the downtown's waterfront area.  Convenient air service to the area is lacking, but cost of living in Knoxville is low.
