Located in south central USA, Arkansas covers more than 53,000 square miles. Bounded on the east by the Mississippi River, the terrain rises from river valley lowlands in the east to the Ozark Mountains in the northwest. Little Rock is the capital city of Arkansas while Pine Bluff and Fayetteville are other leading cities.

Little Rock's economy is largely supported by the state government, private employers in the service sector, and the University of Arkansas's large teaching hospital. Little Rock also has a modest high-tech presence, and boasts great availability of healthcare resources and a low cost of living with relatively high incomes. Summers in Little Rock are warm and humid but winters tend to be mild. Pine Bluff is an agricultural, industrial, and railroad town with a low cost of living but a high violent-crime rate. The economy in Pine Bluff is spurred by cotton, rice, poultry, paper, steel, wire, and electrical manufacturing. Some military-related employment is provided from the Pine Bluff arsenal. Fayetteville is one of the fastest growing regions in the country, and is home to the University if Arkansas. Fayetteville is often lumped together with the neighboring cities of Rogers, Springdale, and Bentonville. Bentonville is home to the headquarters of Wal-Mart, which is the single largest influence on the surrounding economy.
