new orleans louisiana french quarter This southern Gulf coast state covers over 48,000 square miles.  Its terrain includes the lower Mississippi River delta and flood plain as well as a coastal plain rising to low hills in the north.  Louisiana's capital is Baton Rouge and its other major city is New Orleans which suffered extensive damage from hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Thirty miles up the Mississippi River from New Orleans, the state capital of Baton Rouge is a college town and center for the petrochemical industry.  In 2005, Hurricane Katrina brought 800,000 refugees from New Orleans and a good portion of them have stayed indefinitely.  Start-ups and smaller businesses in the city are currently thriving in part as a result of the designation of a Federal Gulf Opportunity Zone.  Tulane, Louisiana State, and Southern University can be found here, along with restaurants, theaters, and other cultural amenities.  Downsides include hot, humid summers and a fairly high crime rate.  New Orleans was drastically affected by the 2005 Hurricane Katrina disaster and in many ways is still struggling to recover.  Prior to the hurricane, New Orleans was a major U.S. port and vibrant tourist destination, showcasing unique creole arts, culture, music, entertainment, food, and history.  New Orleans is and has always been culturally and socio-economically diverse, with a high crime rate but equally high spirits which can be seen in the desire of many locals who have returned to help rebuild New Orleans to its former distinction.
