alamo san antonio texas With an area of more than 266,000 square miles, Texas is the second largest state in the USA.  Located in the southwest, adjacent to Mexico on its southwest and the Gulf of Mexico on its southeast, Texas has a fertile coastal plain, grassland prairies in its interior, and dry high plains toward its northwest.  The Alamo figured importantly in Texas' battle for independence from Mexico.  Austin is the state capital, and other major cities include Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.

Located in west-central Texas, Austin has a lot of positive qualities, including good education and cultural amenities, a pleasant climate, and a strong economy.  Austin is home to the University of Texas and a renowned music scene.  The walkable downtown features many music venues, and plenty of outdoor recreation can be found a short distance west.  Austin's cost of living is the highest in Texas, but still low on a national scale.  The area is business-friendly and attracts high-tech and small business startups alike.  Summers tend to be hot, and rapid growth has led to some urban sprawl.

Dallas is quintessentially "Texas" with its big, bustling, cosmopolitan corporate center.  Many convention centers and corporate headquarters are located in Dallas, and petroleum is a big part of the local economy.  Due to its strong economy and wealthy population, Dallas is home to many parks and cultural assets.  Major league sporting teams are also a big draw.  Population growth in Dallas has exploded, leading to urban sprawl and longer commute times, but a rail-transit program helps to ease some of the gridlock.

Houston is located in southeast Texas and ranks as the fourth largest metro area in the USA.  The economy is supported by the petroleum and petrochemical industry, as well as major corporations such as Continental Airlines, Minute Maid, and American General.  Houston boasts excellent cultural amenities and major league sporting venues.  The cost of living is low, but rapid growth has led to congestion and urban sprawl, as well as air quality ranking among the country's worst.

In south-central Texas, San Antonio is the third largest city in the state, and the eighth largest city in the U.S.  The attractive and modern downtown area contains a River Walk, shops, sidewalk cafes, and plenty of entertainment and cultural amenities.  The city has a distinct Hispanic influence and a laid back atmosphere.  The local economy in San Antonio is supported by a strong banking and financial presence, as well as healthcare, and the headquarters of many corporations.  The downsides include congestion, crime rates, and summer heat.
