Ohio is a midwestern state located south of Lake Erie and covering more than 41,000 square miles. It is hilly in the east and south near the Ohio River. Ohio's capital city is Columbus and its other major cities include Cleveland, Cincinnati, Akron, and Toledo.

Columbus is located in central Ohio along the Scioto River; its economy is a mix of government, industry, and higher education. The Ohio State University brings an intellectual and cultural base to Columbus that helped the city earn an All-American City Award in 2006. There is a strong high-tech presence that attracts an educated workforce and brings economic stability to the area. Cost of living is attractive, but growth has led to urban sprawl, as well as higher crime rates and areas of decay.

Cleveland is located in northeast Ohio along Lake Erie and is a major industrial city with plenty of steel mills and shipping facilities along the waterfront. The 1960s and 1970s brought decline to many of Cleveland's industries, leading to inner city decay from which the city is still recovering. Urban renewal projects have brought improvements, including sports centers and arts and culture amenities. Cleveland has an emerging biotech and medical research industry presence, and healthcare services are among the top in the nation. Cleveland is a city of many neighborhoods, varying greatly in socioeconomic status. Urban decay, poverty, unemployment, and low educational attainment continue to be problems.

Along the Ohio River in southwestern Ohio, Cincinnati is a transportation gateway between the north and south. Proctor & Gamble is the area's largest employer, followed by other soap and cosmetic manufacturers, machine tool manufacturers, financial services, and the auto industry. The city contains many interesting neighborhoods and showcases some European culture and architecture brought over by German and Italian immigrants. Arts and culture amenities abound, but rapid growth has led to suburban sprawl and some downtown decay.

Akron, located in northeastern Ohio, is an industrial city led by the rubber industry. Akron is a corporate center for many tire companies, including Goodyear, Uniroyal-Goodrich, and GenCorp. Entertainment options are lacking and the climate is cloudy and wet, but the cost of living is low. In northwest Ohio at the western corner of Lake Erie, Toledo is a Great Lakes port, as well as an industrial and transportation center. Auto parts and glassmaking are leading industries, and the cost of living is low. The city has an industrial atmosphere, experiences gloomy winters, and is vulnerable to economic downturns.
