alaska city and mountains Lying in the extreme northwest of North America, Alaska is the largest state in the USA and covers more than 591,000 square miles.  To its west lies the Bering Strait and Siberia; to the north lies the Arctic Ocean; to the east lies Canada; and to the south lies the Gulf of Alaska and the North Pacific Ocean.  Alaska is a rugged land of mountains, forests and northern tundra.  Its Mount McKinley is the highest mountain in North America.  Alaska's capital city is Juneau and its major cities include Anchorage and Fairbanks.

As the capital city of Alaska, Juneau's greatest source of employment exists in the government sector.  Tourism, especially the cruise ship industry, accounts for the second largest source of employment.  Other major industries include the fishing industry, real estate, and mining.  Juneau is also home to theater, music, and arts festivals throughout the year.  Anchorage is Alaska's largest city and provides that state with most of its commercial industries and a clean, attractive downtown area with a relatively moderate climate and beautiful scenery.  It has a growing economy but a relatively high cost of living due to its geographic isolation.  Fairbanks is a frontier town that serves as a military, education, and health center, with the University of Alaska as a major employer.  Fairbanks experiences extreme temperature variations and its relative isolation makes for a higher cost of living.
