Several national forests and parks, including Olympic National Park and Mount Rainier National Park, provide plenty of recreational activities for the outdoor enthusiast. The local economy is supported by state government, healthcare, and education. Olympia has abundant local music and entertainment, but a high cost of living and a cloudy and rainy climate. Seattle is a lively city on the eastern short of Puget Sound in west-central Washington. It is surrounded by dramatic scenery and has a culturally rich downtown with plenty of coffee shops and local music venues. Abundant recreation and transportation amenities are also available. Seattle is home to the University of Washington and is a regional center for banking, consumer products, and high-tech companies. It has one of the rainier climates in the United States and contends with a high cost of living and congestion. Located in extreme eastern Washington, Spokane is a financial, cultural, and retail hub influencing a large area of Washington, Montana, and Idaho. The economy is built on agriculture, commerce, and industry, and outdoor recreation opportunities are excellent. The downtown area is attractive with arts and culture amenities, but Spokane deals with harsh winters and high levels of property crime. At the southern end of the Puget sound in west-central Washington, Tacoma is a port city with an economy dependent on shipping, paper and lumber mills, and manufacturing industries. Downtown revitalization has attracted museums and other cultural and entertainment amenities, as well as a high-speed fiber optic system. Recreation opportunities are good and the cost of living is moderate for its proximity to Seattle. Tacoma's downsides include cloudy and rainy weather, an industrial setting, and high crime rates.
