Straddling the Great Plains to the east and the northern Rocky Mountains to the west, Montana covers more than 147,000 square miles in area. Montana's Big Sky dominates the horizon on the undulating prairies and Glacier National Park, with its high mountains and glacial lakes, is a popular destination for travelers. Montana's capital city is Helena. Other notable cities in Montana include Billings, Great Falls and Missoula.

The capital city of Helena has a diverse economy supported by the government sector as well as mining, telecommunications, ranching, and other enterprises. Helena has a small town atmosphere and many recreational activities such as hiking and skiing, but the cost of living in Helena is relatively high and the city has less than adequate healthcare facilities. Billings is the largest city in Montana, located along the Yellowstone River in south central Montana. There are plenty of outdoor recreational opportunities, some of which provide seasonal employment. Other employment opportunities lie in the mineral, petroleum, and forest products industries. Lying along the upper Mississippi River in north central Montana, Great Falls is mainly commercial and agricultural. Lewis and Clark National Forest to the west and Glacier National Park to the northwest provide excellent recreation. Great Falls has a small town atmosphere and good housing prices but endures harsh winters and is fairly isolated. In western Montana, the college town of Missoula is home to the University of Montana. A large portion of Missoula's employment comes from the university and the National Forest Service.
