This midwestern state, whose capital is Lansing, is mostly surrounded
by the Great Lakes and covers more than 58,000 square miles.
Michigan consists of two large land segments — the Upper Peninsula
and the Lower Peninsula — which are linked by the Mackinac
bridge. The western portion of the Upper Peninsula
is a rugged, mineral-rich upland, while the rest of the state is made up
of lowlands and rolling hills. The motor vehicle industry has a
strong presence in the state. Its major cities include Detroit,
Grand Rapids, and Kalamazoo.
Located halfway between Detroit and Grand Rapids, the capital city of Lansing is supported by the government, Michigan State University, and a large GM assembly plant. East Lansing has a college town atmosphere with capital city amenities. The cost of living in Lansing and East Lansing is attractive, but GM's downsizing has created much unemployment in the region and economic stability is uncertain.
Located across the border from Windsor, Ontario, Detroit was once a Great Lakes transportation center and then an industrial center, giving it the nickname "Motor City". It eventually became an auto manufacturing empire attracting an ethnically diverse, working class population. Ironically, with the advent of the automobile, people began moving out into the suburbs, and the urban area deteriorated quickly. Detroit takes great pride in professional sports and there are some museums and performing arts venues, but much of Detroit currently remains in disrepair with an uncertain economic future.
Grand Rapids is located in west central Michigan and has a diverse economy with good cultural amenities. It is home to manufacturers of high-tech office furniture and growers of berries, lettuce, flowers, apples, peaches, and cherries. There are abundant outdoor activities and several performing arts venues. The downtown area is attractive and cost of living is low. Located in southwestern Michigan, Kalamazoo is an industrial and commercial center and home to Western Michigan College and Kalamazoo College. Manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and pharmaceuticals research, and food flavorings businesses create a large part of the economy, but unemployment in the area is still high. Northern Michigan features scenic Great Lakes shorelines and many small lakes; the towns in this region cater to the summer tourist trade.
