maine lighthouse This northeastern New England coastal state covers more than 33,000 square miles.  From its rocky and scenic coast, the terrain rises in the north and west to forested uplands and the Appalachian Mountains, with their many lakes and valleys.  Maine's capital is Augusta and its major cities include Portland and Bangor.

Augusta was originally a shipping port for fur, timber, and ice.  It is the third smallest state capital in the USA, and government, financial institutions, and healthcare make up a large part of its economy.  Augusta is home to several museums and historic sites, as well as the University of Maine.  There are many outdoor recreational opportunities, but Augusta is lacking in big city amenities.  Educational attainment is relatively low and much of the population of Augusta lives below the poverty line.  Portland is the cultural center of Maine and its largest city.  Located in southern Maine on the Atlantic coast, shipping and fishing are its primary industries.  Portland's Old Port area has been revitalized with entertainment amenities and good seafood restaurants.  The population of Portland tends to be well-educated and professional, and the city has a relatively high cost of living.  Located along the Penobscot River, Bangor is a center of lumber, paper, and shipping.  It has a small town feel with cultural amenities such as the nation's longest continuously performing symphony orchestra.  However, Bangor is isolated from services often found in other cities and endures a long, harsh winter.
