In north-central Utah, Salt Lake City is a rapidly growing self-contained city that functions as a headquarters for the Mormon community. It is a major commercial and cultural center with a favorable business climate and close proximity to excellent outdoor recreation including rafting, hiking, and skiing. The downtown area is clean and attractive, with capitol buildings and wide boulevards. Salt Lake City has recently been experiencing an influx of migrants from farther west, increasing the general crowding and commute time. At the south end of the greater Salt Lake City area, Provo is home to Brigham Young University and has a strong college town feel. High-tech, service firms, and the university support the local economy, and the downtown is modern and clean. Many recreational opportunities exist in the surrounding area and cost of living is low, but Provo is contending with some rapid growth and air quality issues.
