south carolina plantation Located in the southeast, along the Atlantic coast, South Carolina covers more than 31,000 square miles.  The terrain rises from a low coastal plain to the piedmont of the interior.  South Carolina's capital is Columbia, and its other major cities include Charleston and Greenville.

Located in central South Carolina, Columbia is a commercial, industrial, and educational center, as well as the state's largest city.  The University of South Carolina gives Columbia a college town feel and adds some sports-related entertainment.  The waterfront area has been restored and the downtown has a number of historic buildings.  Summers are hot and humid and Columbia lacks convenient air service, but cost of living is low.

Charleston is located in southeastern South Carolina on the Atlantic coast and has a unique history as a seaport and business center.  Charleston was the location for the beginning of the Civil War, and the city features many points of interest, in addition to a well-preserved historic residential district.  Tourism and small businesses help drive the economy, and cost of living is moderate.  Summers are hot and humid, but winters are mild and the atmosphere in Charleston is slow-paced and dignified.  In northwest South Carolina near the North Carolina border, Greenville is located in an old agriculture and textile region.  The population is well educated and the downtown area is clean, vibrant, and historic.  Arts amenities include a symphony, ballet, and theater.  Automaker BMW has a plant located 7 miles east in Greer, adding many jobs to the region.  Cost of living is low, but Greenville contends with its share of traffic, crime, and urban sprawl.
