mount hood oregon This Pacific northwestern state covers more than 97,000 square miles and is bordered by the Columbia River to the north.  Much of the population lives in western Oregon's Willamette River valley.  Mount Hood and the Cascade Range lie to the east of this valley.  Oregon's capital is Salem; its other major city is Portland.

Located in west central Oregon, Salem is home to the state government, as well as Willamette University and Corban University.  The economy is supported by state government, followed by farming, agricultural food processing, healthcare, and telecommunications.  The Willamette River flows through Salem, and the downtown area features parks, museums, an opera house, and many cultural events held throughout the year.  There are some attractive residential areas surrounding the city but cost of living is relatively high.  Portland is located along the Columbia River in northwestern Oregon; the city is a cosmopolitan center of the Pacific Northwest, with a thriving arts and culture scene.  The clean downtown area features a financial district as well as parks, shopping, museums, and entertainment venues.  Once dependent on forest and food products processing, the local economy is now supported by a strong high-tech and creative employment presence.  Portland's residents experience longer than average commute times, but public transit is good, with a nationally-acclaimed light-rail system.  The city is a satisfying blend of the old and the new, and the high cost of living reflects this.  The area is often cloudy and receives a high degree of annual rainfall.
