Raleigh is combined with Durham and Chapel Hill to form an area known as the Research Triangle for its high-tech presence. Durham is home to Duke University, while Chapel Hill is home to the University of North Carolina. The area boasts a a solid economic base and an educated population, along with a low cost of living and attractive residential areas. Raleigh has experienced high growth from a large number of relocations, which has added to some sprawl and longer commute times.
Near the South Carolina border, Charlotte is a modern financial center with a diverse economy. Charlotte is the headquarters for more banks than any other USA city outside of New York. The city is also home to several professional sports teams and is in close proximity to a NASCAR racing circuit. Charlotte boasts a Southern-style friendliness, but also contends with urban sprawl and high crime rates.
Wilmington is a port city on the southern coast of North Carolina. In addition to shipping, its other main industries are agricultural processing and flowers. Wilmington has a historic town center and waterfront with a pleasant climate, but the city is relatively isolated and has a higher cost of living than most other areas in the state. Greensboro is located in northwest-central North Carolina and is home to a satellite campus of the University of North Carolina. Finance, high tech, and light manufacturing lead the economy, and the cost of living is low. The downsides include some declining industry, as well as rapid growth and hot, humid summers.
