antebellum home mississippi Located in south central United States and bounded on the west by the Mississippi River, this state covers over 47,000 square miles.  The landscape of this Gulf coast state ranges from hilly pine woods to river lowlands and plains.  Mississippi's capital is Jackson and its major cities of Biloxi and Gulfport suffered serious damage from hurricane Katrina in 2005.

The capital city of Jackson is located in west central Mississippi, and its economy is driven by commerce, manufacturing, and the government sector.  Healthcare in Jackson is good and the cost of living is low.  Outdoor recreation and water sports opportunities exist in the nearby area, and the city's arts presence is better than would be expected for its somewhat struggling economy.  Biloxi and Gulfport are located on the Mississippi Gulf.  At least 90% of the buildings along the coast in Biloxi were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, utterly devastating the tourism industry on which the town depended.  Many of the casinos have been restored and Biloxi is often claimed to be the third largest gambling destination in the USA, behind Las Vegas and Atlantic City.  While Biloxi tends to be commercial, Gulfport is more of a residential beach community and is the second largest city in Mississippi.  It was also greatly impacted by Hurricane Katrina, and employment in both Gulfport and Biloxi has been temporarily bolstered by current reconstruction efforts.
