twin cities minnesota This northerly midwestern state covers over 84,000 square miles and has extensive woodland areas and fertile prairies.  Minnesota is noted for its numerous lakes.  St. Paul is its capital and its other major cities include Minneapolis, Rochester, and Duluth.

Minneapolis and St. Paul are known as "twin cities"; together, they serve as an industrial, commercial, educational, and cultural center for the upper Midwest.  The twin cities serve as headquarters for large agricultural firms, as well as banking, technology, healthcare, and transportation.  The downtown areas of Minneapolis and St. Paul sit on opposite sides of the Mississippi River, and they both have plenty of nightlife, parks, museums, sporting venues, and other cultural amenities.  Minneapolis tends to be more cosmopolitan, while St. Paul is more traditionally Midwest.  Cost of living is high, but schools in the area are excellent and the population tends to be well educated.

Rochester is a agricultural center in southeast Minnesota.  The renowned Mayo Clinic medical research and practice center is a major economic driver for the area, and Rochester has the best healthcare rating in the country.  Rochester also has a good park system and low crime rate, but lacks cultural amenities.  Duluth is an inland port located in northeast Minnesota at the western end of Lake Superior.  Shipping of grain and iron ore is central to the economy, and the town has a commercial and industrial feel.  The downtown has been attractively restored and outdoor recreational opportunities exist to the north, but the area is currently experiencing low job growth.
