annapolis maryland This mid-Atlantic state covers over 10,000 square miles and features a coastal plain around the Chesapeake Bay, rich farmland on the midsection plateau, and the Appalachian Mountains in the west.  Maryland's capital is Annapolis and its largest city is Baltimore.

Situated on the Chesapeake Bay, Annapolis is a picturesque state capital, with most of its buildings in the Colonial style.  Annapolis is home to the United States Naval Academy, and features many museums, monuments, and historic sites.  The downtown area houses many shops and seafood restaurants along the waterfront.  In addition to the government, the economy of Annapolis is led by healthcare and the Naval Academy.  Annapolis is economically and racially diverse, with a moderately high cost of living.  Baltimore is located 40 miles northeast of Washington D.C. along the Chesapeake Bay and is driven by shipping, transportation, and manufacturing industries.  The downtown waterfront has been restored to include a first-class aquarium, as well as many restaurants and entertainment venues.  Baltimore is a city of economic contrasts, featuring reclaimed up-and-coming neighborhoods as well as run down areas with a higher crime rate.  Baltimore features excellent public transportation and sporting venues, and a moderate cost of living.
