chicago illinois Illinois is a midwestern prairie state that covers more than 56,000 square miles.  The Illinois River runs through the state from northeast to southwest.  Bounded on the west by the Mississippi River, on the northeast by Lake Michigan, and on the south by the Ohio River, Illinois is an agricultural state with strong industrial and insurance centers.  Illinois' capital is Springfield and its major cities include Chicago, Rockford and Peoria.

The capital city of Springfield is a quiet agricultural town with a heritage built around Abraham Lincoln's residence.  The population is fairly well-educated and employment is dominated by government and healthcare providers.  Healthcare in the area is better than average, and Springfield has a low cost of living.

Chicago, also known as the "Windy City," is the commercial, industrial, and cultural hub of the midwest.  Passenger and freight transportation are essential pillars of the economy here, as are commercial and manufacturing businesses.  Chicago is a city of "neighborhoods" and is extremely economically diverse.  Chicago's numerous amenities include museums, restaurants, sports and performing arts venues, and quality higher education.  Higher cost of living, crime, long commuting times, and urban sprawl which are typical of many large cities are also a factor here.

Located 80 miles west of Chicago is the small town of Rockford, whose economy is built upon agriculture, aviation, aerospace, precision tools, and medicine.  The once-neglected economy of Rockford is being revitalized by new commuter access, low housing costs, and downtown and waterfront rehabilitation.  Peoria is a small community located in north-central Illinois.  One of the oldest cities in the state, Peoria is a business, industrial, and agricultural center where healthcare quality is above average and cost of living is low.
