atlanta georgia peachtree street One of the original thirteen colonies, Georgia is a southeastern state whose capital is Atlanta.  It covers more than 58,000 square miles and its terrain rises from coastal lowlands and piedmont to hills in the north.  Georgia's other leading cities include Savannah, Macon, Augusta, and Columbus.

Located at the southern tip of the Appalachian mountains, Georgia's capital city of Atlanta was founded as a transportation crossroads, and has grown into a headquarters business center for many major corporations.  Atlanta provides good housing and educational opportunities and is a blend of modern corporate America along with Southern roots.  The city of Savannah exemplifies the laid back charm and hospitality of the South, with its historic mansions and cobblestone, tree-lined streets.  Hospitality, tourism, and port facilities are major economic drivers in the area, but incomes remain low overall.  Macon began as a textile mill town, and has grown to include many manufacturers and distributors such as automotive and aerospace firms.  Macon has made a name for itself with Southern-style food, music, and restaurants, and features more historic places than any other Georgia city.  Located along the Savannah River, Augusta was founded as a resort and country club destination for northerners looking to escape harsh winters.  The city offers historic interest, world class golf, and a low cost of living.  Along the Chattahoochee River lies the town of Columbus which was once a producer of textiles.  Columbus is located near the Fort Benning Army Base which is the major supporter of its struggling economy.
