connecticut mystic seaport This southern New England state borders Long Island Sound to the south and covers over 5,000 square miles.  The densely settled Connecticut River valley runs from north to south through the state.  Its capital is Hartford and its major cities include Bridgeport, New Haven, and Stamford.

The insurance industry plays a major role in the economy of Connecticut's capital city of Hartford.  The city center combines older historic buildings with a modern downtown that provides plenty of museums and cultural events.  The northern sections of Hartford are commercial, while West Hartford is an upscale residential area, and East Hartford tends to be more blue collar.  Bridgeport used to be known for large machinery and brass products, but has emerged as a major center for corporate financial operations.  The economy is diverse and property taxes are among the highest in the nation.  Stamford is part of the Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk metro area.  It has one of the highest-educated populations in the United States and is one of the USA's safest cities.  New Haven is the home of Yale University and boasts a historic downtown core, good healthcare, and plenty of college town amenities along with a high cost of living.  The economy is mainly boosted by the university and service industries, although a biotech presence has begun to make itself known.
